Working exclusively with Watercolour monotypes, Amber Moir’s unconventional approach to printmaking explores and reconstitutes the limitations of traditional techniques. The rudimentary but physically demanding process of printing large-scale monotypes with an agricultural roller lacks the refinement and control associated with orthodox printmaking traditions. Often bearing delicate marks, the final calico pieces avoid direct proclamations of process, while more nuanced formal elements such as gashes, strips of folded fabric and variations in the printed area act as signifiers of their making.Amber Moir graduated from the University of Stellenbosch with a degree in Fine Arts in 2014. She spent the subsequent two years living on Kyushu Island, Japan and returned at the end of 2017. Moir has since been living and working in Cape Town, South Africa.
